Mrs X: I have been feeling some pains around the cannula site plus it’s a little bit swollen!!!

Doctor X: So sorry about that lovely. I will quickly check the site for signs of PHLEBITIS using “Catholic POPE”

Mrs X: What does that mean???

Doctor X: 😊 It’s simply to know if you have got an inflamed vein and to know if the cannula should be removed.

Catholic = Cord, feel for palpable cord around site
P= Pain, are you feeling any pain around site
O = Oedema, check for swelling around site
P = Pyrexia, feel for warmth around site
E = Erythema, check for redness around site

Doctor X: Darling, I have to remove your cannula as your VIP (visual inspection of phlebitis) score is 2. You have got Pain and Oedema (1+1).
