Nigeria among top countries as foreign-born births hit 40% 28/05/2026

More than 15,500 babies were born to mothers born in Nigeria in England and Wales in 2025, as the share of children with at least one foreign-born parent reached a record high.
New figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 40.2 per cent of babies born in England and Wales last year had at least one parent who was born outside the UK.
It was the first time the figure had passed 40 per cent. The rate was 39.5 per cent in 2024 and 30.1 per cent in 2008, showing a major shift in the background of parents giving birth in England and Wales.
The figures refer to parents’ country of birth, not nationality or immigration status. This means some parents counted as foreign-born may now be British citizens, while others may have lived in the UK for many years.

Resident doctors in England are set to embark on a new round of strike action in June.

This follows a meeting between the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Health Secretary, James Murray.

It is understood that Murray ruled out pay negotiations, describing the union’s demands for higher wages as “unrealistic and unaffordable.”

Resident doctors in England have seen pay increases of around 33% over the past four years, including a 3.5% rise this year.

Their starting salaries now stand at just over £40,000, while the most senior resident doctors earn about £76,500 in basic pay.

In addition, many doctors receive extra income for working unsociable hours and taking on additional shifts.

However, the British Medical Association (BMA) maintains that, when adjusted for inflation, doctors are still earning about 20% less than they did in 2008.

UK and Poland sign defence pact amid Russian threat 27/05/2026

Keir Starmer has revealed that Russian aggression remains the biggest challenge facing the UK and Poland as both countries signed a new defence and security agreement.

Starmer held talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk at RAF Northolt in west London to formalise the agreement.

The UK Prime Minister said the pact comprises creating defence jobs, boosting cyber defence, securing borders more effectively, and breaking up organised crime groups, describing the agreement as a “generational uplift” in the relationship with Poland.

Giving his reason for the agreement, Starmer said: “There’s no greater challenge for either of our countries than the challenge of Russian aggression, and we see that not just in Ukraine itself, but beyond Ukraine, impacting our own countries,” Starmer said.

“So that’s the context in which we sign what is actually a generational uplift in the relationship on security and defence between our two countries,” he added.

Eid-ul-Adha: Doro Urges Sacrifice, Compassion 27/05/2026

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard M. Doro, has called on Nigerians to embrace sacrifice, compassion, generosity, and unity as Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Adha.
In his Eid message, Doro said the celebration should remind citizens of the values needed to build a peaceful, caring, and inclusive society.
“As we celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, may this season of sacrifice, devotion, and compassion bring peace, prosperity, and blessings to you and your family,” the minister said.
He urged Nigerians to reflect on the deeper meaning of the celebration, especially at a time when many families are dealing with economic hardship and social challenges.
“May the lessons of sacrifice and generosity inspire us to continue building a more caring, just, and inclusive society for all,” he added.
Doro also extended the traditional greeting, “Barka da Sallah,” to Muslim faithful and other Nigerians celebrating with them.
