The organisations that struggle most with regulatory audits are rarely the ones with the weakest policies.

They have the widest gap between what the policy says and what the team actually does when a real transaction hits a real edge case.

That gap has a name: it is a training gap, and it shows up in audit findings in a very predictable pattern.

- First finding: staff applied the wrong customer due diligence tier to a transaction category.
- Next finding: the same category, a different staff member, the same error.

Repeat findings are the clearest signal in payments compliance that an organisation has treated training as a one-time event rather than a continuous capability.

The regulator sees it, the audit committee sees it, and yet the instinct is still to fix the policy.

The policy did not cause the first finding, and it will not prevent the second.

What changes the pattern is structured, role-specific training that builds genuine understanding rather than checkbox completion.

A settlements officer who can explain why a transaction triggered a flag, not just that it did. A KYC analyst who understands the regulatory logic behind a requirement, not just the procedure for meeting it.

That level of knowledge comes from deliberate investment in building it. The organisations getting clean audit cycles are not luckier. They are better trained.

Most compliance failures in African payments are not policy failures.
The policy exists but the team does not fully understand how to apply it.

That one difference explains most of the compliance cost that organisations are quietly absorbing and they are expensive when they cluster.

The conversation we have most often with compliance leads across the continent starts the same way:

"We have the framework. We just need the team to actually understand it."
That is a training problem and it is more solvable than most organisations realise.

Your payment rails are ready and so should your team.

The organisations that will define the next decade of African payments are not just the ones with the best technology but the ones with knowledgeable teams.

That knowledge does not build itself, it has to be invested in deliberately.

We work with African payment organisations and professionals to build exactly that capability with training and advisory built for the continent.

If this is the conversation your organisation needs to be having, reach out through the link below.

The License to Last: Why Regulation and Governance Now Decide Who Survives in African Payments – THISDAYLIVE 26/06/2026

For a decade, payments in Africa rewarded one thing: speed of growth. In 2026, the question has changed.

Regulators from Lagos to Nairobi to London now ask a harder one: Can you prove you are safe, solvent, and well governed? Capital thresholds are climbing, AML monitoring is going real-time, and data protection now carries real fines.

Governance has quietly become the real moat. The license to operate is becoming the license to last.

We covered this in our press release for the week.

The License to Last: Why Regulation and Governance Now Decide Who Survives in African Payments – THISDAYLIVE Within months of each other, three of Africa’s biggest payment markets moved on the same front. Nigeria’s central bank demanded written roadmaps for automated anti-money laundering systems, with the deadline landing this week. Ghana switched on a sweeping cybersecurity directive covering every l...

Payments are scaling rapidly across Africa. New technologies are being adopted. Transaction volumes are climbing. Financial services are reaching more people than ever.

The depth of expertise required to support that growth is not scaling at the same pace. The gap is not always visible, but its impact is. It shows up as delayed decisions, compliance challenges, and systems that operate without being fully understood.

Most of the issues organisations face in payments are not technology problems. They are knowledge and ex*****on problems.

At Intreensic, we work on closing that gap through three pillars.

1. Payments Training: We design learning experiences that go beyond surface-level understanding. Our programmes cover how payments systems work in practice: infrastructure, regulatory considerations, and operational realities.

The goal is to produce professionals who can engage with complexity and make decisions that hold up under pressure.

2. Payments Consulting: We partner with financial institutions, fintechs, and regulators across strategy, operations, and compliance. Our advice is grounded in operational experience inside payments ecosystems, not framework decks.

3. Made in Payments: The podcast hosted by our Founder, Nkebet Mesele, which captures the people, decisions, and frameworks shaping African payments. Episodes are available on our YouTube and Spotify channels.

Why this matters.

Strong payments systems depend on people who understand them deeply. Without that depth, growth introduces risk faster than the institution can manage it.

If you are working in African payments or building a payments product, this conversation is yours.
