TRAGIC LAKE DEATH OF RAF HOPEFUL PANASHE MUCHENJE LEAVES FAMILY DEVASTATED

The family of 19-year-old Panashe Muchenje have paid a heartfelt tribute to a young man described as energetic, loving and deeply valued by everyone who knew him after he tragically lost his life following an incident at Balderton Lake near Newark.

Panashe, who lived in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, got into difficulty while in the water at Balderton Lake, off Heron Way in New Balderton, on 28 May. Emergency services rushed to the scene and paramedics fought to save him before he was taken to hospital. Despite their efforts, he sadly died two days later on 30 May.

His death has sent shockwaves through his family, friends, church community and the wider local area, with loved ones now speaking publicly about the devastating impact of losing a young man who had his whole future ahead of him.

According to family members, Panashe had moved to the United Kingdom from Zimbabwe around three years ago and had quickly become a well-liked and respected member of his community. He was studying at Nottingham College and was in the process of applying to join the Royal Air Force, a goal he had been working hard towards before his life was cut tragically short.

His uncle, Maxwell Muchenje, described him as a young man full of energy and kindness who was loved by many people around him.

He said Panashe was deeply involved in his church community and was known for his friendly personality and willingness to help others. Those who knew him remember him as someone who brought positivity wherever he went and who had ambitions for a bright future.

The family have also spoken about the distress caused by videos of the incident being circulated online. Maxwell urged members of the public to stop sharing footage and to avoid speculating about the circumstances surrounding Panashe’s death.

He said the circulation of videos and rumours was causing additional pain for grieving relatives who are already struggling to come to terms with their loss.

The family have stressed that they believe the incident was a tragic accident and have asked people to respect their privacy while they mourn.

Maxwell explained that Panashe had basic swimming abilities and had entered the water while spending time with friends. One of those friends reportedly entered the lake in an attempt to help him after realising he was in difficulty.

However, the depth and conditions of the lake made rescue efforts extremely difficult. His friends were unable to reach him in time despite their attempts to assist.

The family have also defended the young people who were with Panashe that day, making it clear they do not blame them for what happened. Maxwell said they are themselves suffering significant trauma after witnessing the tragedy unfold and losing a close friend.

Nottinghamshire Police previously confirmed that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and that a file will be prepared for the coroner.

As preparations continue for Panashe’s funeral next week, his family have expressed gratitude for the support they have received from the local community, emergency services, hospital staff and members of their church.

The death serves as another heartbreaking reminder of the dangers associated with open water, particularly during periods of warm weather when lakes, rivers and reservoirs can attract large numbers of young people seeking relief from high temperatures. Even experienced swimmers can quickly encounter difficulties due to sudden changes in depth, cold water shock, hidden hazards and challenging conditions beneath the surface.

For Panashe’s loved ones, however, the focus remains on remembering a young man whose life was full of promise. A student, church member and aspiring RAF recruit, he leaves behind family and friends who are now mourning a future that will never be realised.

His family hope that people will remember him for the person he was rather than the circumstances of his death, and have asked for compassion, respect and understanding as they continue to grieve.
