Nigeria Taekwondo Federation Targets Medals At African Games And 2028 Olympics
More than 300 athletes have showcased their talents at the 2026 National Taekwondo Open Trials held at the Alake Sports Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Mrs Tayo Popoola, described the three-day event as a huge success, saying the trials exposed fresh talents and helped the federation prepare a strong national team for future international competitions.
Mrs Popoola expressed satisfaction with the quality of performances displayed by the athletes, adding that the federation is committed to grooming competitors capable of winning medals for Nigeria at the African Games and the 2028 Summer Olympics.
She noted that the trials were designed to identify and nurture young talents who could become world-class athletes within the next few years.
The NTF President also highlighted the importance of the Kukkiwon Dan Grading conducted during the event, explaining that the certification is essential for athletes hoping to compete internationally.
Mrs Popoola commended the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, for attending the trials and encouraging athletes and stakeholders.
She further disclosed that Nigeria has concluded arrangements to participate in the African Taekwondo Championships scheduled for Bamako, Mali, from May 29 to June 2, 2026.
According to her, athletes selected from the Abeokuta trials, including para-athletes, will represent Nigeria in both Poomsae and Kyorugi events.
In a remark, the NSC Director General, Chief Bukola Olopade assured athletes that their sacrifices and dedication to representing Nigeria remain valued by the Federal Government.
He also urged the athletes to remain focused, disciplined and committed as they prepare for the African Championship in Mali.
