France has said it cannot confirm reports that mines have been laid in the Strait of Hormuz, following claims that multiple mines may have been detected in the area.

French Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin stated that there is currently no certainty on the matter, but confirmed preparations are underway in case mine-clearing operations become necessary.

She added that mine countermeasure vessels are being deployed as part of a potential future Franco-British-led mission, noting that France already has a vessel stationed at its base in Djibouti.

Earlier reporting from CBS News cited U.S. intelligence assessments claiming that American forces had identified at least 10 mines in the strait, according to officials familiar with the situation speaking anonymously on sensitive security matters.
