Sapphire sat across from River, her heart racing with every glance. Their dinner conversation was stilted, each word carefully chosen.

River's piercing eyes seemed to bore into her soul. "Sapphire, tell me about yourself," he said, his voice low.

She hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "I'm studying business," she began. "I love reading and—"

"I know," River interrupted. "Your father told me."

Sapphire felt a surge of disappointment. "Then what do you want to know?" she asked.

River leaned in, his face inches from hers. "Everything," he whispered.

Sapphire's heart skipped a beat.

The rest of dinner passed in a blur.

As the night drew to a close, Sapphire breathed a sigh of relief.

But River's parting words left her reeling: "We'll be married in two weeks, Sapphire."
