Balancing Safety and Budget in Facilities Maintenance
In my experience as a facilities management executive, I've witnessed firsthand how budget constraints and low awareness of safety standards can lead teams into risky practices. This issue is crucial, especially when managing critical infrastructure.
Recently, I was invited to inspect a site where a voltage surge had damaged the inverter system in the IT room. Typically, IT loads should be connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), which offers built-in surge protection and voltage regulation. However, the client opted for an inverter due to the high cost of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
At another location, I observed the use of fuse bases and carriers instead of circuit breakers. While Fuses and Circuit Breakers protect against overloads and short circuits, Breakers offer additional benefits such as being resettable and faster reset speeds. Despite the higher initial cost of Circuit Breakers, their features provide enhanced safety for many applications.
These scenarios underscore a prevalent challenge: balancing cost with compliance to safety standards. Itβs imperative to recognise that investing in the right equipment not only ensures safety but can prevent costly failures down the line.
I invite you to share your experiences. What compromises have you seen in facilities that challenge safety? How do you navigate budget constraints while maintaining high standards? ποΈπ§
