Most brides start out with honest intention of losing moderate weight months before the “big day". I help them with measures to ensure they fit into their perfect gown. (Having lost more than 25kg, I think I know a thing or two. In fact scratch that! I know a lot about losing excess body weight.)
Fast forward to 3 weeks to the day and all hell is let loose. Plans and counter plans, sharing IV, meetings, appointments and reappointments, agreements and disagreements. She suddenly finds herself skipping meals, missing breakfast or lunch and then too tired to eat dinner. At last she becomes underweight. Her eyes become sunken, her waist too tiny and the dream gown becomes oversize.
Being Overweight and obese has taken front stage of weight issues, no one is talking about being Underweight. So if you find yourself in this dilemma or you just want to gain weight without compromising your health, here are practical ideas to help you out.
1. Breakfast: Consciously ensure you eat your breakfast every day. The body spends energy at night and needs to refuel hence the name break-FAST. It keeps you energized while running around for your big day.
2. Eat frequently: apart from ensuring you don’t miss breakfast, you have to deliberately eat often. Having your lunch and dinner will provide your body with energy needed to stop you from losing weight.
3. Yoghurt: This is a great way of adding healthy fat to your body. Natural unsweetened yoghurt is a good source of protein which will help you add a few inches to your waistline without being overweight.
4. Fruits & healthy snacks: snacking on fatty rich fruits and nuts like avocado, groundnut, banana and African pear can help you gain healthy weight.
This shouldn’t be an excuse to indulge in JUNK food or eat without caution. Remember to constantly monitor your weight gain as you don’t want to crossover to being overweight.
