Building a Career in Architecture:
Architects design buildings and other structures. In addition to considering the way these buildings and structures look, they also make sure they are functional, safe, economical and suit the needs of the people who use them.
Employment Facts:
There were approximately 113,700 architects employed in 2010, mostly in the architectural, engineering and related services industry. About a quarter were self employed. Most jobs were full-time positions, but if you're thinking 9 to 5, you're wrong. Many architects work over 50 hours a week and those hours include weekends and evenings. While they work in offices most of the time, they also have to visit construction sites to check up on the progress of the projects they have designed.
Educational Requirements:
To become an architect one must earn a professional degree in architecture after completing one of the following programs offered at many colleges and universities:

5-year Bachelor of Architecture program intended for students entering programs from high school or with no previous architectural training
2-year Master of Architecture program for students with a pre-professional undergraduate degree in architecture or a related area

Generally, the professional degree in architecture must be from a school of architecture accredited by the Nigeria Institute of Architect (NIA). A few schools don't have this requirement.

Why Do You Need to Know About Educational Requirements?
Other Requirements:
In the UNITED STATE those who want to provide architectural services must be licensed but not so in NIGERIA there is a lot of quark architects. To become a licensed architect one must earn a professional degree in architecture, complete a period of practical training or internship, and pass all divisions of the ARE (Architect Registration Examination).

One needs certain qualities to succeed in this occupation. If you want to be an architect you should be creative and have good visualization skills. Not only do you need to be able to create designs for buildings and other structures, you need to be able to see, in your mind's eye, what they will look like once they are built. Since architects have to describe their ideas to other people including clients and colleagues, you must have strong communication skills. The ability to think critically will help you solve problems that inevitably arise during most projects.
Advancement Opportunities:
A licensed architect, after gaining experience, may take on increasingly responsible duties and eventual managing entire projects. Architects may advance to supervisory or managerial positions in large firms. Some become partners in established firms while others set up their own practices.

Why Do You Need to Know About Advancement?
Job Outlook:
Employment in this field is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2020. Prospective architects may face competition for positions at prestigious firms. To increase one's chances of getting an internship after graduation, it is important to get career-related experience in an architectural firm while still in school. Those who know CADD technology will also have an advantage.

Why Do You Need to Know About Job Outlook?
Earnings:
Architects earned median annual earnings of #5867200 and median hourly wages of #15.26 in 2011. Recent graduates working on internships will earn much less. Those starting out in private practices will go through a period of time when they are operating at a loss.

A Day in an Architect's Life:
On a typical day an architect will:

Discuss the objectives, requirements, and budget of a project
Provide various predesign services which may include conducting feasibility and environmental impact studies, selecting a site, or specifying the requirements the design must meet
Prepare drawings and present ideas for the client to review
Develop final construction plans that show the building's appearance as well as details for its construction
Follow building codes, zoning laws, fire regulations, and other ordinances
Make necessary changes throughout the planning.

Most of the time, we know exactly why we didn’t get hired. But in case you weren’t asked for a second or third interview or despite of doing well in the interview (in your opinion) you didn’t get that job for some weird reason, read below the top reasons you’re still unemployed: 1.You asked for too much money Economics matter to all of us. You can’t ask for a 6 figure salary just because you have lived beyond your means for a long time. Unemployment means that many are competing for the same job as you are and they are willing to take less money to ensure financial security and future career opportunities. Look, there is a “great reset” going on. Salaries are lower these days. We interviewed one person for a $30K job who had been making $70K. Frankly, we’re not going to hire someone with that huge of a salary gap. It isn’t the problem of employers you have lived beyond your means. Everyone is tight these days. Don’t go asking for a large salary and tons of perks. You might well have to bite the bullet and take much less to get off of the unemployment rolls. 2.You didn’t look your best To give you an idea of how someone is not looking professional, think of your friend or colleague who showed up one day with one of those “stubble beards”. The people who are probably making the hiring decision would not appreciate the grungy look that’s going on there. Always look your best and don’t risk trying on new outfits or new hairstyles. 3.You’re over qualified Realistically, it’s not professional nor wise to hire someone with 10+ years of experience with a great deal of responsibility in their last job for an entry-level job. Entry-level jobs will be filled by entry-level people. Employers know that if they hire you when you’re overqualified, you’d be gone in a heartbeat if something in your field comes along, and that you won’t stay and grow with their company. Would you hire someone like that? I know I won’t. 4.You’re a smoker Smokers take excessive frequent breaks, they get sick more often and their clothes smell which will drive off customers and colleagues. If you’re not going to quit for your health, do it for your career. 5.Your job title has disappeared (or is endangered). Many job titles and industries have disappeared or were divided into sub-jobs (specializations). Sometimes, the job is done by people already in the company. If this is happening to your career, consider going back to school or changing industries. 6.Your attitude stinks. You might be coming across as having an arrogant or generally bad attitude. Chewing gum, not dressing for the interview, arguing, and saying what you will and won’t do are all interview killers. 7.You didn’t read the job description You might have the right qualifications for the job but if you missed that line about this job being for females only, or residents of a certain city where you don’t live; that’s it you will not be considered for any other job by the employer as they now think you don’t read. Do you have the required number of years of experience? Do you know that you’re applying to a full-time job? Make sure you read the job description very well, especially the requirements part. 8.You missed out on your next interview Interviews can be traditional or non-traditional. For example, your potential employer might ask you to come to one of their events to meet clients or to a staff meeting to introduce you. If you decline the invitation you’d have missed out on your interview all together and that’s that. hope these reasons have shed some light on why you’re still unemployed.

ARCHITECTURE IN NIGERA
Architecture is one of the old professions like Agriculture,Medicine e.t.c in Nigeria. The study of architecture dated back to our ancestors that first settle in the country. The yoruba’s back then start surrounding their environment with fat mud walls, the walls were of puddle mud and red colour materials e.g palm oil. The building plan of the Yoruba’s is more like “face me and slap you” ghetto type buildings of now a day, with verandah around the court, with branches of trees as the roof and rafia palm etc. The Housa’s inherit their style from the Northern African’s and their main buildings and structures were built using red bricks, reinforced ramparts of stone and bricks. The igbos architecture were more like the Yoruba’s,igbo people built their houses with mud, timber and rafia palm stems which are used for the wall support and the construction of roof as well. then moving to the southern Nigeria where the ijaw’s and co. Settled they develop their style of architecture by studying their environment and use the available resources to build their house. The southerners are mostly surrounded by water “river Niger” and they adapt to their environment by the use of timber to construct their house by suspending the building above the water using timber pile foundation to hold the building and some build a floating house that is more like a canoe that had canoe base which carry the supper structure and make use of rafia palm to construct their roof. Due to development and urbanisation we are now having the kind of architectureal structure we re having in our various city.Lagos hv recorded a lot of transformation in recent years and a lot of new mod
