SERMON FROM A DOG-MEAT JOINT.

Dog meat is a delicacy greatly revered and celebrated, especially, in the South Eastern coastal region of Nigeria.
Back in the days, dog meat canteens littered the entire city of Calabar.
In fact, it was so popular that, before Governor Donald Duke came with his tractors and coal-tarred the roads, a whole stretch of a particular street was paved with dog bones; a testament to the number of dogs that had surrendered their lives there. I think it was Ekpo Nsa Abasi. That was the Golgotha of dogs!
At the street corner, in a half-walled and zinc-roofed mini restaurant, sat a dark skinned mass of a woman who presided over the cooking and sales of the delicacy.
She sat astride a massive metal pot that looked more like a basin and in her hand was a giant aluminium spoon, discoloured by frequent forays in the hot broth of "unam ebua" (dog meat). She wielded the giant spoon like a symbol of authority.
She was the Bishop of the Assembly.

*Please avoid the temptation of wondering what I went to do there and follow my sermon closely. Do not let the devil distract you at this point 😁.

It was lunchtime, and, as was their custom, a congregation of faithfuls gathered in fellowship. Boy! It was a communion of some sort.
As the presiding bishop dished out portions of the delicacy, a pottage of dog meat, unripe plantain, periwinkles and "ntong" (scent leaf), the congregants devoured same with incredible zeal and speed to make room for new comers waiting in the flanks.
Then came this little boy in his school uniform. He was on the queue to partake of the feast.
When his turn came, he held out a plate with his left hand and with his right, pushed a crumpled note at the woman.
For a moment, the woman looked up at the boy and then, pursing her lips, she angrily lifted the big cooking spoon above her head in a gesture of threat to strike the boy.
The little school boy scampered away while the woman mumbled her objection to children stealing money from their parents to partake in adult adventure.
WOW!
She chased him away!
She wasn't carried away by the prospect of making an extra buck.
I marvelled at the woman's sense of morality and strength of character.

"Not even in Israel have I found such faith", as Jesus once said.
As I walked home that day, and ever since, thoughts of the noble deed of that woman never left me.
Obviously, she needed the money, but not at the expense of her conscience. She would rather forfeit the profit than succumb to being an accomplice to evil.
I beheld great faith in the most unlikely place. She preached the gospel so eloquently without quoting a verse of Scripture.
No wonder someone said, "Preach the gospel with everything in you, if necessary, use words".

She didn't say she was a pastor, deaconess or evangelist. She didn't say the name of her church denomination. She didn't need to give a teaching on faith, wisdom and integrity. She was not a professor of faith. She was a doer.
How so often "faith" has faltered and fled in the face of profit and little pleasures... Oh, wretched man!

Faith begets values and virtues, not just things.
Faith, like wisdom, is justified by her children.
