“The mistake I made when I was a newbie in sewing…”

Let me be honest with you…

When I first started sewing, I thought the goal was to just finish clothes fast.

I didn’t care too much about neatness.

I didn’t pay attention to proper measurements.

As long as the dress looked “okay” and the customer smiled small, I felt I was doing well.

Big mistake.

Because what I didn’t realize then was this:

People may collect your work… but they won’t come back if the finishing is poor.

I remember making a dress I was so proud of… until I saw it later on someone else.
The fitting was off.

The seams weren’t sitting well.

The whole thing just didn’t look professional.
That day humbled me.

I had to go back and learn what I skipped-

• Accurate measurements
• Proper ironing while sewing
• Clean finishing (very important!)
• Patience

Because sewing is not just about “joining fabric”…
It’s about creating something that speaks before you even say a word.

If you’re just starting, please learn from me:

Don’t rush to produce quantity, build QUALITY first.

Even if it takes you longer…
Even if others seem faster than you…

Your neat work will announce you in rooms you haven’t entered yet.

Tell me, what mistake have YOU made as a beginner? Let’s help each other grow ❤️

CONTINUATION(part 2)

I sought out an alternative venue to advance my knowledge, paid the associated costs, and initiated my learning journey.

This is an account of my experiences, which I am sharing, particularly for the benefit of latecomers. If you miss the first part, check it out, i posted the part 1.

I met one person there, who happened to be someone i know already, then later another person joined us, she was complete novice.

the woman was doing well at first, whenever she was cutting , she would always call us to come, if anyone asked question, she was always explaining with patience, until something entered into her.

she changed, she was always taking clothes home to cut on weekends, then bring them to shop on mondays and ask us to sew, at first we thought it was because of the festive work, so that we can meet up but after the festive season, it continued, that was when i knew that e don pass becareful.

She had this jumpsuit pattern( the one without joining on the waist) i asked her to teach me how to cut it, she said ok but she never did, even the pattern sef, she removed it from the place she normally put it and all other patterns.

well to cut long story short, i left there before the time i was suppose to leave, and after a while, the other girl that came after me left and the first girl,(the one i met there)was the only person with her, she wanted to leave but she was still owing the woman some money, but as soon as the money was paid, she too left.

please madam/oga,you see that apprentice you have with you, it is your responsibility to teach that person the work he/she came to learn from you , as long as you collected money from them, teach them and do not hoard your knowledge , i know there are some that are not serious, but you just do your best and leave the rest to God.

Whoever is serious will gain and whoever is not serious will not, with this i rest my case. See you on my next post.
