I am privileged to have participated in the 'It’s Time - to CHAMPion Multilevel Climate Action' breakfast during New York Climate Week 2024. This high-level convening of global subnational leaders provided a platform for in-depth discussions on innovative strategies and multi-tiered governance approaches to confront the pressing climate crisis. As Commissioner for Special Duties & Intergovernmental Relations, I reaffirmed the Cross River State Government’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development under the visionary leadership of Sen. Prince Bassey Otu. The event underscored the role of local, regional, and national governments in driving climate action, as we collectively work to implement best practices and cutting-edge solutions that will spearhead a just transition to a greener future.
Additionally, I had the honor of attending and speaking at the strategic session on “Tackling the 2030 Methane Challenge - Accelerating Action for Subnational Governments”, which convened global experts and leaders to address the critical issue of methane emissions. As a potent greenhouse gas, methane plays a significant role in global warming, and the session provided a platform to discuss actionable policies and collaborative frameworks for reducing emissions. I emphasized Cross River State’s alignment with Nigeria’s commitments under the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) and Global Methane Pledge (GMP), highlighting our state's ongoing climate initiatives. With the impending establishment of the Cross River State Council on Climate Change, we aim to strengthen synergies with Nigeria’s National Council on Climate Change and leverage multilateral platforms such as the Under2Coalition and CHAMP to achieve ambitious methane reduction targets. Together, we will chart a path towards a low-carbon future.
