Eti-Osa Constituency I NDC Primary Election Cancelled Amid Security Concerns and Alleged Presence of Armed Touts
Lagos, Nigeria – May 29, 2026
The scheduled primary election for Eti-Osa Constituency I of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) was abruptly cancelled on Friday following serious security concerns and allegations of intimidation by suspected armed touts at the venue.
The exercise, which was slated to take place at Eden Gardens Estate, Sangotedo, Lagos State, was disrupted before voting could commence, according to officials assigned to monitor and supervise the process.
Party members and stakeholders reportedly began arriving at the venue from about 9:00 a.m. after preparations, including environmental cleanup and venue arrangements, had been completed.
However, tensions escalated when a group of individuals described by witnesses as underaged persons and suspected touts allegedly entered the venue. The group was reportedly followed by another set of individuals alleged to be associated with prominent party figures.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the presence of the suspected touts created fear and unease among delegates and party members. Several attendees reportedly raised concerns over the security situation, with allegations emerging that some of the individuals were issuing threats and claiming to be armed.
Following complaints from party members, one of the accused political figures allegedly directed the individuals to move outside the venue. Reports also surfaced that some of the suspected touts had been issued party membership cards earlier on the same day.
The situation worsened during the screening process when, according to observers, the same group forcefully re-entered the venue approximately twenty minutes after screening commenced. The incident reportedly triggered panic and confusion among attendees.
As tensions mounted, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), members of the Electoral Committee, party local government officials, and several aspirants were said to have vacated the premises due to safety concerns.
Faced with the deteriorating security situation, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee officially announced the cancellation of the primary election.
Observers noted that after the departure of officials and party members, it became impossible to verify or monitor any subsequent activities at the venue, as the electoral process had effectively been terminated.
Video recordings documenting the events have reportedly been attached as evidence to support the claims made by election observers.
The cancellation of the Eti-Osa Constituency I primary election is expected to generate further discussions within the party as stakeholders seek a resolution and determine the next steps for the constituency's candidate selection process.
Meanwhile in Constituency 2 of Eti Osa, unlike what happened in Constituency 1, the voting went smoothly,. Aside Hassan Zamani who is contesting for the House of Assembly unopposed, and the presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, Honourable Adedayo Akin-Taylor Ekong, gained the highest number of votes, with 372 votes.
