The gemsbok, also known as an oryx, is a superb-looking antelope and common across the deserts of Namibia, so much so that it features on the Namibian coat of arms and presidential seal. .
Few animals are so well adapted to exist in the incredibly harsh environs of the Namib desert and the dry Etosha pan. .

Gemsbok can persist for great lengths of time without drinking thanks to a number of amazing adaptations; they do not sweat and instead vary their body temperature without impacting the functionality of major organs; their urine is highly concentrated (you can definitely smell the ammonia if one goes near your vehicle!); and the nasal membrane has many folds that permit cooling of blood flow through the nostrils to reduce body temperature. .
