I once joined a team with other social media managers for a project. One of the managers left and her task was shifted to me with no pay raise.

Deep down, I knew taking on another person’s task with mine would be hectic but I was new and didn’t want to lose the opportunity by saying no.

In no time, I was overwhelmed and frustrated. Whenever I tried to bring it up, the management would say really nice things about my work and somehow I would let it go.

It’s always been hard for me to say ‘no’. I was a people pleaser who thought saying no was disrespectful or unappreciative.

Having trouble saying ‘no’ or pleasing people? Here’s what I’d recommend:
- You’ve got to know that your NO is just as powerful as your YES. Use it.
- Don’t be afraid to say no. You’re allowed to say no. Just keep things polite.
- Speak up on time. Especially after you’ve said yes and realize you shouldn’t have.
- Set healthy boundaries from the beginning. Don’t overlook things you aren’t comfortable with, address it on time to avoid future problems.

Is this something you struggle with? Tell me how you deal with situations that require you to say no.
