Bet can do better
Only Fuse ODG and Yemi Alade stood by WIZ when he was calling BET out in 2015 the rest were scAred of being cancelled , if only everyone supported the movement I doubt if they will for ones think of going back to disrespecting our artist not after our music is now global.
For the first time since 2018, the BET Awards have gone back to giving Afrobeats artists their awards backstage.
At the 2025 BET Awards, Ayra Starr won the Best International Act category but was only discovered via instagram post meanwhile she was present at the Award ceremony.
This feels like a flashback to exactly what Wizkid fought against in 2015–2017.
Back then, African artists were handed their trophies backstage or before empty seats, hours before the real show.
In 2017, Wizkid boldly rejected this treatment, refusing to attend and calling them out publicly:
“This is why I don’t go to the shows mehn.”
Because of that bold move, in 2018, when Davido won, he was handed his award live on stage, in front of a full audience and on national TV—marking a shift in how BET treated African acts.
Now in 2025, it seems like we’ve taken a step backward.
Was this a mistake, or are BET quietly disrespecting Afrobeats again? 🧐👇
