The first telephone in the area, now known as Nigeria, was installed in Lagos in 1886. By 1893, telephones were a common feature in almost all colonial offices in Lagos.

From Lagos, it was extended to Ilorin and then to Jebba at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. And then to Calabar and Kano.
