A new development has emerged in the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, with reports indicating that the kidnappers are demanding a ₦1 billion ransom and the implementation of Sharia law as conditions for the victims’ release.

According to reports, the abductors have also demanded two Hilux vehicles, food supplies, and the release of individuals allegedly linked to their network who are being held in detention facilities in Oyo State.

The ransom is reportedly to be paid into a bank account in neighbouring Benin Republic.

The victims were abducted after armed men attacked schools in Oriire LGA, sparking renewed concerns over insecurity and school safety in the state. Nigerian food delivery platform Chowdeck has introduced a new Vendor Badges system and strengthened its vendor verification process following concerns over how businesses are onboarded.

The move comes after an investigation revealed that a fake restaurant was successfully registered on the platform using fabricated business details, including a false address, fake tax information, and images taken from an existing Lagos restaurant. The listing was reportedly approved and even fulfilled an order, raising questions about the company’s initial verification system.

Chowdeck said the new measures are aimed at improving transparency and rebuilding user trust as Nigeria’s online food delivery market continues to grow.
