What Are Figures Of Speech?
Figures of speech are expressions that are beyond their literal meanings.
Figurative expressions are used to create a laudable effect; either emotional or otherwise, to emphasise, elaborate, make pleasant or for fashion sometimes. Below are some figures of speech, their meanings, differences and examples.
1- PARALIPSIS: This is a figure of speech that a person hides an obvious truth. The speaker has to discuss or talk about sombody's or something's merit or demerit indirectly.
EXAMPLES: If a person want to state the lazyness of sombody can say "I will not talk of his tiredless ability." .
B- we don't have to mention her Limitless Hard work.
2-IRONY: this is the figure of speech that means the opposite of what is expressed. It is the reversal meaning of expression.
EXAMPLES:
A- She is loved and admired because she is very ugly.
B- He has a pure heart since he never forgives.
C- Abdul is very poor that he bought an earoplane.
CONTRAST:
both IRONY and PARALIPSIS do express opposites. But the difference existing between them is that Paralipsis has the opposition on the entire statement in which the truth is hidden. Irony centralises only on the qualifier/modifier which has taken the same opposite qualifier/modifier.
Paralipsis hides truth to such an extent that the listener has to have a tremendous food for thought. Irony reverses meaning of an expresion and the listener understands this through the words being used in the expression.
3- PUN: the play on words with different meaning or with synonymous sound.
Examples:
A- The TIN is very THIN
B- They can't weather the weather but I can weather the weather.
C- Some principles were given by principal.
4- REPETITION: the repeating of the same word twise or more in an expression:
Examples:
A- I have a watch man and a wtch dog.
B- He wear black cloth in the black night and walks inside the black bush.
