Beyond the Facade: Unpacking Nigeria's Political Reality
Nasir El-Rufai's recent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has sent shockwaves through Nigeria's political landscape. While many are celebrating this move as a significant shift, it's crucial to separate fact from fiction.
El-Rufai's defection is not a harbinger of change; it's a tactical move by a seasoned politician. As a key figure in the APC, he was part of the party responsible for Nigeria's economic hardship. His inaction in power did nothing to alleviate the suffering of ordinary citizens.
Nigeria's history is replete with examples of politicians switching parties, only to maintain the status quo. The rise of the APC was a response to the failures of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), but many APC politicians were the same individuals who had made life difficult for Nigerians under the PDP.
The same cycle is repeating itself with the SDP. Those joining El-Rufai in his new party will largely be the same politicians from APC, PDP, and other parties. This is not genuine change; it's a game of musical chairs, where the same faces keep rotating while the masses continue to suffer.
To achieve true change, Nigerians must look beyond these career politicians and demand fresh faces and new leadership. We must stop celebrating mere political defections and start holding our leaders accountable
