Breaking: 16 LG Chairmanship Aspirants In The Last Council Election Threaten Mass Resignation Over ‘Betrayed Promises’ By The Governor

TARABA DAILYGRAPH

A major political crisis is brewing in Taraba State as all 16 Local Government Chairmanship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2025 elections have concluded plans to resign en masse, alongside their supporters, over what they described as “failed promises” by Governor Agbu Kefas.

The aggrieved aspirants, drawn from the 16 local government areas of the state, accused the governor of abandoning commitments made to them after they stepped down for his preferred candidates during the party’s chairmanship primaries.

Their decision was made known to journalists by the former Ibi Local Government chairmanship aspirant, Barrister Ibrahim Habu (Esq), AICMC, who spoke on behalf of the group.

According to him, the aspirants only agreed to withdraw from the race following direct appeals from Governor Kefas, who allegedly promised them political appointments as compensation for their loyalty and sacrifice.

“We honoured the governor’s request in good faith and stepped down to ensure a smooth, unopposed process. That decision was also influenced by interventions from the national leadership of the party and key stakeholders during the tenure of Bar. El-Sudi,” he said.

He added that despite those assurances, none of the promised appointments have been fulfilled, leaving many of the aspirants politically stranded and disillusioned.

“This is a clear case of political betrayal. We can no longer continue to mobilize support for a system that has failed to honour its own commitments,” Habu stated.

The group warned that their planned resignation, which includes withdrawing support for Governor Kefas, could significantly weaken the APC’s grassroots structure across Taraba State.

Political observers say the development, if carried out, may trigger a wider defection wave and deepen internal divisions within the party ahead of future elections.
