When society misunderstands albinism, people with albinism suffer—not because of their biology, but because of ignorance.

Albinism is often noticed before it is understood. People see light skin, light hair, or unusual eyes—and assumptions rush in. This lesson begins by slowing that rush.
Albinism is a genetic condition that affects how the body produces melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for coloring the skin, hair, and eyes. It also plays a critical role in protecting the skin from sunlight and supporting normal vision development.

Albinism is not contagious.
It is not caused by witchcraft.
It is not a punishment or curse.
It is not the result of something a parent did wrong.

A person with albinism is born with it. It is written quietly into their genes long before anyone can see it.
One of the most misunderstood aspects of albinism is that it is often treated as a cosmetic difference. In reality, the most serious challenges of albinism are visual and medical, not aesthetic.

When society misunderstands albinism, people with albinism suffer—not because of their biology, but because of ignorance.
