WAEC REVIEWED AND STREAMLINED CURRICULUM: WE DO NOT ISSUE DIRECTIVES ON SENIOR SECONDARY CURRICULA TO SCHOOLS

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has noted with concern recent media publications that alleged that the Council directed the restriction of Senior Secondary students to offer specific subject(s) for the forthcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates (SC) 2026.

WAEC wishes to categorically distance itself from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject. WAEC hereby affirms that the Council did not issue any such directive(s) nor restrict the choice of students to offer any particular subject(s) for WASSCE (SC) 2026 as alleged.

We wish to point out to all stakeholders and the general public, that the development and regulation of Curricula in Nigeria is within the purview of the Federal Government of Nigeria. WAEC, as an examination body only comes in to implement Government policies via assessment.

As a law-abiding organization, WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country. The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government. We emphasize that changes in the Curriculum are not implemented arbitrarily by the Council, but by following due process as mandated by the Federal Government.

NECO OPENS UK EXAM CENTRE FOR NIGERIANS IN DIASPORA:

The National Examinations Council said it has established a new examination centre in London, United Kingdom, as part of its global expansion drive to provide credible assessment opportunities for Nigerians in the diaspora.

Unveiling the centre during the Education Matters Conference UK 2025, NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, said the initiative was developed in partnership with Barnfield Education Ltd.

He described the new Senior School Certificate Examination centre as a strategic step toward extending NECO’s global footprint, adding that the Council now administers examinations in seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, with new centres awaiting accreditation in Egypt and Burkina Faso.

According to Wushishi, the London centre would empower Nigerians abroad, promote national pride, and strengthen the global recognition of NECO certificates, which are already accepted by several UK universities, including Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University, as well as institutions in the United States, Canada, India, China, and Russia.
