Abnormal metabolism occurs when our body struggles to process food into energy correctly, often leading to high blood sugar, excess fat, and poor cholesterol control.
We all need to know that addressing abnormal metabolism is central to combating non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension.
Those early signs such as frequent urination, fatigue, unexplained weight gain, or blurred vision we sometimes easily ignored as nothing to worry about needs to be given second thoughts
However, we are saying making yourself available for medical screening and health education, especially on diets and sustainable lifestyle changes, may go a long way in successfully managing metabolic irregularities.

May Measure Month (MMM) with ROHSI: Know Your Numbers, Save Your Life
May Measure Month (MMM) is a global campaign led by the International Society of Hypertension to raise awareness about high blood pressure and encourage people to check their blood pressure.
This May, Rays of Hope Support Initiative (ROHSI) is joining the movement during World Hypertension Week to bring free blood pressure screening and education directly to communities in Ibadan and the surrounding areas.
Hypertension is often called the “silent killer” because it shows no symptoms until it causes serious damage to the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes. In Nigeria, millions live with high blood pressure without knowing it.
For many, the first sign is a stroke, heart attack, or kidney failure—events that are often preventable with early detection and treatment.
For people already living with , MMM is a reminder to monitor your blood pressure regularly, take prescribed medications consistently, and adopt healthier habits, like reducing salt, staying active, and avoiding excess alcohol.
We need to understand that uncontrolled blood pressure increases the risk of complications that can shorten life and reduce quality of living.
For ROHSI community members who have never checked their , this is your call to action. A simple, 2-minute check can reveal if you are at risk.
Early knowledge means early action, and early action saves lives, protects families, and preserves livelihoods.
Join us this year as we mark May Measurement Month—MMM. Take 2 minutes to check your blood pressure. Knowing your numbers is the first step to living longer and healthier.

World Hypertension Day 2026

Why Nigerians Can No Longer Ignore the "Silent Killer" Called Hypertension!

On May 17, the world stops to recognise World Hypertension Day. While it might sound like just another date on the calendar, for Nigeria, it represents a fight for the heart of our nation. Yes! The very heart of our nation.

The Reality Check, hypertension is the leading cause of preventable death and stroke worldwide, yet it remains "silent" because it rarely shows symptoms until a crisis occurs.

Globally, over 1.4billion people live with hypertension, but most are unaware because it often presents with no symptoms.

In Nigeria, the numbers are alarming:

• 39 million – the estimated number of Nigerian adults living with high blood pressure.

• The Youth Shift – No longer just a "senior citizen" disease; we are seeing a massive spike in cases among Nigerians under 40.

Today, 1 in 3 affected Nigerians doesn't know they have it, and only a tiny fraction is receiving effective treatment.

Why is this happening? A combination of high-salt diets, lack of exercise, and the mounting socioeconomic stress of modern life has created a public health crisis. Whether you live in a bustling city or a rural village, the risk is now equally high.

At ROHSI, we are calling on our policymakers to prioritise health initiatives that make screening accessible for everyone. 'We cannot defeat a "silent killer" if we aren't looking for it'.We encourage every Nigerian to take control of their health.

This World Hypertension Day, let’s embrace the theme: "Controlling Hypertension Together". Visit a clinic, use a pharmacy screening, or check your pressure at home. Understanding your readings is the first step toward a long, healthy life.

Don’t wait for a sign. Know your numbers today.

Lupus What You Need To Know In Simple Terms!
Lupus is a long-term illness where the body’s immune system, which normally fights infection, mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues. This can cause swelling and damage in parts like the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain.
Common Signs to Watch For: Extreme tiredness that doesn’t go away with rest Pain, stiffness, or swelling in the joints A rash on the face that looks like a butterfly across the nose and cheeks Skin rashes that get worse in sunlight Fever, hair loss, and mouth sores
Not everyone gets all these symptoms, and they can come and go. This is why lupus is sometimes called “the great imitator” – it can look like other .
Who Gets It:
Lupus is more common in women, especially between ages 20 and 50. For every 9 women with lupus, about 1 man has it. The exact cause isn’t known, but it involves a mix of family genes and triggers like , too much sun, or certain .
How It’s Found and Managed:
Doctors diagnose lupus using blood tests, urine tests, and by checking your symptoms. There’s no cure yet, but it can be managed. Treatment usually includes medicines like hydroxychloroquine to calm the immune system, and sometimes steroids to reduce swelling during flare-ups.
If you have ongoing fatigue, joint pain, or unusual rashes, visit a health centre for checks. We are saying early care helps prevent damage and keeps you living well.
