π¨β οΈIMPACT OF MASKING ON INDIVIDUAL WITH AUTISM
Masking causes immense cognitive and emotional strain, leading to exhaustion (autistic burnout); constantly monitoring and suppressing natural traits, such as stimming, forcing eye contact. This can lead to reduced cognitive function, and a diminished capacity to cope with daily life. Studies show a strong link between masking and increased rates of depression, anxiety disorders, and even suicidal thoughts among autistic individuals.
The constant pressure to maintain a neurotypical way of life can generate anxiety and depression. The pressure to maintain a facade nurtures inauthenticity and isolation, potentially hindering accurate diagnosis and support.
"Masking is the single biggest barrier to autism diagnosis there is. When autistic kids mask in school it creates a dichotomy between home and school behaviours and leads to parent blame in too many situations.ββ PDA Dad UK
Ultimately, the NAS (National Autistic Society) underscores the detrimental impact of masking, advocating for societal acceptance that allows autistic individuals to be their authentic selves for improved well-being.
