🌟 From Learning to Impact: A Story of Change from Jigawa 🌟

At Prime Initiative for Community Development and Fiscal Transparency, we believe that when citizens understand the budget, they can shape development in their communities.

One inspiring example is Nuriya Haruna Bako, Founder/Coordinator of Jigawa Women Entrepreneurs Network.

Nuriya participated in our Multi-Stakeholder Engagement on Budget Implementation, Tracking and Advocacy supported by Christian Aid in Nigeria. Before the training, she never paid much attention to understanding state budget and tax provisions. But through the knowledge and practical skills gained, her perspective completely changed.

After the training, she began tracking the 2025 state budget and discovered a provision for a trade fair under the Ministry of Commerce.

Rather than stopping at awareness, she took action.

Through JIWEN, she formally applied for support and partnership to host a trade fair in Dutse. The budget was approved, funds were released, and the trade fair was successfully held — creating significant opportunities for women entrepreneurs across the state.

Building on this momentum, she also advocated for capacity building for cooperative members, which has now been included in the proposed 2026 budget.

This is the power of capacity building: ✅ Knowledge
✅ Confidence
✅ Action
✅ Results
✅ Policy Influence

We sincerely appreciate Startup Jigawa for identifying and encouraging strong women leaders like Nuriya to participate in the training.

When citizens understand the budget, development becomes intentional, inclusive, and accountable.

📢 Community Progress Update from Shuwarin Market, Kiyawa LGA!

We’re excited to share new developments from Shuwarin Market, where tangible improvements are now visible following the signing of the Tax-for-Service (T4S) Agreement.

🛠️ New Stalls Constructed
Traders’ requests for improved and safer trading spaces have begun taking shape, with the construction of new stalls at "Kara" to enhance business activities and support a more organized market environment.

🚧 Laterite Filling of Affected Areas
As part of the agreed actions, laterite filling is ongoing to address water-logged and damaged sections of the market. This will improve accessibility, reduce flooding challenges, and create a cleaner and more functional space for both buyers and sellers.

These developments reflect a strong commitment from the Kiyawa Local Government, community leaders, and market associations to ensure that taxpayer contributions translate into real and meaningful services.

This is Tax-for-Service in action—where citizens’ voices guide public spending, and government delivers with transparency and accountability.
Together, we move toward a more inclusive, responsive, and people-centered governance system in Jigawa State.
