When do you feel most connected to your creativity?
One of the most important lessons in pottery is learning when to stop shaping a piece.
It's tempting to keep adjusting, refining, and making "just one more change." But sometimes, the more we work a form, the further we move away from what made it beautiful in the first place.
Clay has a way of teaching restraint. There comes a moment when a piece has said all it needs to say, and the wisest thing a potter can do is step back and leave it alone.
Knowing when to continue is a skill. Knowing when to stop is an even greater one.
Some of the best pots are not the ones that were worked the hardest, but the ones that were left alone at the right moment.
Clay on its own is simply a material full of possibilities.
But in the hands of a maker, it can become something more — a vessel, a sculpture, a story, or a work of art. Through skill, imagination, and patience, a simple lump of earth is transformed into something meaningful.
That's one of the things I love about ceramics. It reminds us that art is not only in the material itself, but in the vision and dedication of the person shaping it.
The clay provides the potential. The hands bring it to life.
