This May, CARD is shining a light on one of the most overlooked crises of our time — gender inequality in our environmental systems.

Women make up nearly 43% of the agricultural workforce in developing countries. They collect the water, they tend to the land.

Yet they own less than 20% of land. They are rarely included in decisions about water governance. And when climate change hits, they are the first to feel it and the last to receive support.

This week, we’re asking a simple question: How can we build climate-resilient communities when half the population is left out?

Follow our page this May as we unpack gender inequality in land, water, and climate — and explore the solutions that are already working.

Women depend on natural resources such as water, forests, and fertile land for their livelihoods, including farming and household energy needs.

However, climate change and unsustainable practices are putting these resources under increasing pressure. For example, reliance on firewood contributes to deforestation, which in turn worsens climate change.

This is why climate-smart agriculture and clean energy solutions are essential.

At CARD, we empower women and youth with sustainable alternatives that protect the environment while strengthening livelihoods, because when women are empowered, communities thrive.

On March 31st, CARD, in collaboration with Soil Values, convened a one-day Town Hall Meeting bringing together key stakeholders and community beneficiaries across Bauchi, Kano, and Jigawa States.

The meeting engaged representatives from the military, police, civil defense, judiciary, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Women Affairs, and other critical actors, alongside women beneficiaries from watershed communities across the three states.

Together, we had honest and solutions-driven conversations around women's rights, access to justice, and collective action. A key highlight of the event was the demonstration of the “Give to Gain” approach emphasizing community responsibility, ownership, and sustainable impact.

This engagement marks another step forward in strengthening collaboration between communities and institutions to promote justice, equity, and empowerment for women.
