That Michael Faraday was born in the country village of Newington, Surrey, now a part of South London. His father was a blacksmith who had migrated from the north of England earlier in 1791 to look for work. His mother was a country woman of great calm and wisdom who supported her son emotionally through a difficult childhood. Faraday was one of four children, all of whom were hard put to get enough to eat, since their father was often ill and incapable of working steadily. Faraday later recalled being given one loaf of bread that had to last him for a week. The family belonged to a small Christian sect, called Sandemanians, that provided spiritual sustenance to Faraday throughout his life. It was the single most important influence upon him and strongly affected the way in which he approached and interpreted nature.

Question 1: Obtain the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the earth.
Given, Radius of earth R = 6.37 ×× 103 km,
Mass of earth M = 5.98 ×× 1024 kg,
Gravitational constant G = 6.67300 ×× 10-11 m3 kg-1 s-2

Solution:

Equation of force,
F = GMmR2GMmR2
where F is the force,
m is the mass of the body,
g is the acceleration due to gravity,
M is the mass of the Earth,
R is the radius of the Earth and
G is the gravitational constant
F = GMmr2GMmr2 = m ×× a.
The acceleration due to gravity is given by
a = GMr2GMr2
= 6.67300×10−11m3kg−1s−2×5.98×1024kg6.37×103m26.67300×10−11m3kg−1s−2×5.98×1024kg6.37×103m2 .
= 9.8 m/s2.



Question 2: An electric Heater is connected to a 220 V mains supply and draws a current of 5 A. Calculate the Power rating of the Heater?
Solution:

Current drawn I = 5 A
∴∴ Power rating P = V ×× I
= 220 ×× 5
= 1100 W.
Thus the Power rating is 1100 W.
