WHAT IS CARARACT
It is the clouding of the lens(a tissue in the eye located behind the brown iris and is usually transparent and helps focus light on the retina)which then blocks the passage of light

HOW COMMON IS CATARACT
36% of every blindness in Africa is caused by cataract, it can sometimes be found in young people and new born babies..

AM I AT RISK OF DEVELOPING CATARACT
The exact cause is unknown,but you are at risk of developing cataract as you grow old,
Smoking
Certain diseases like diabetes
Long use of steroid
Eye injury
Heriditory influences
Events before birth -German measles of the mother

SYMPTOMS
Cloudy vision
You may see it as milky or whitish spot on the pupil

TYPES OF CATARACT
Age related- caused by old age

Congenital -these are present at birth and caused by infection or inflammation during pregnancy.
Traumatic cataract- from hard heat, cut, puncture, chemical burn and intense heat.

Secondary cataract caused by disease or drug use

TREATMENT
Cataract extraction, using phaco technique or using the small incision cataract surgery technique
