POLICE, INEC FINALISE ELECTION SECURITY BLUEPRINT AS IGP DISU VOWS CRACKDOWN ON VIOLENCE, NO FAVOURITISM

Nigeria’s electoral security architecture is being tightened as the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assured of robust protection for voters and a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct ahead of upcoming elections.

The assurance followed a high-level strategy meeting between the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja, where both institutions mapped out a comprehensive framework to secure future polls.

The meeting focused on preparations for off-cycle governorship elections, bye-elections, and the 2027 general elections, with both sides acknowledging growing security concerns that could threaten credible voting if not properly addressed.

Disu revealed that the police have activated intelligence-led strategies to tackle electoral violence, including monitoring political thuggery, strengthening protection of electoral materials, and coordinating operations with other security agencies.

He also made it clear that the police will remain neutral, warning that no political party or candidate will receive preferential treatment, and any officer found acting in a partisan manner will face strict disciplinary action.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, on his part, stressed the need for proactive security planning, including risk assessments to identify flashpoints and ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials, and materials across the country.

Both institutions also emphasized inclusivity, with plans to ensure Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) can vote without fear or obstruction.

The police further confirmed that officers deployed for election duties are undergoing specialized training on rules of engagement, human rights compliance, and crisis response, as part of efforts to guarantee professionalism during elections.

With rising concerns over insecurity and electoral violence, the joint strategy signals a coordinated push to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic process, as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
