For mercy that sustained your days.

A quiet strength in khaki stood,
With burdened heart for nation’s good;
Through fractured lands and seasons torn,
He carried hope for those forlorn.

Not crowned by noise nor ruled by pride,
But calm conviction at his side;
A steward through Nigeria’s storm,
With faith to keep her spirit warm.

His voice still walks through history’s hall,
A call for peace embracing all;
From Plateau hills to river’s flow,
The nation learnt the name Gowon.

And long when fading years are gone,
His labour still shall linger on;
For men may lead and men may reign,
But few leave peace in history’s vein.
