NASA is preparing a multi billion dollar plan to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon within the next 7 years, signaling a new phase of the modern space race.

The project is part of the Artemis program led by NASA, aiming to return astronauts to the lunar surface and build long term infrastructure. The estimated investment of around 20 billion dollars includes habitat modules, life support systems, and a small nuclear reactor designed to provide continuous power during the Moon’s 14 day long nights.

This base is expected to be located near the Moon’s south pole, a region believed to contain water ice deposits inside permanently shadowed craters. Water can be converted into oxygen and hydrogen for breathing and fuel, making it critical for sustaining human life and future missions deeper into space.

Research shows a growing pattern that global powers are accelerating lunar plans, with China also targeting a Moon base within a similar timeframe. This competition is driving rapid innovation in propulsion systems, robotics, and energy technologies needed to survive extreme lunar conditions where temperatures can swing from minus 173 to 127 degrees Celsius.
