"The ₦1,000 That Changed Everything"
Last month, I entered a keke and told the rider I was going to Orile. He looked at me, nodded, and said, “₦500.” I agreed without haggling—something I usually never do.
When we got to my destination, I reached into my pocket and realized I had only one ₦1,000 note.
“I don’t have change,” I said, feeling slightly embarrassed.
The man turned and smiled. “Don’t worry. Enter your compound. When you find change, come out and pay me.”
I was surprised. No arguments, no attitude. Just calm trust.
I went inside, searched for change, but couldn't find any. I came out with the ₦1,000 note and told him to keep it. He refused.
He said something that stuck with me:
“I’m not hungry because of ₦500. I’m hungry for people to trust each other again.”
I forced the money into his hand, but he dropped it on his seat and drove off.
I stood there, holding my ₦1,000, with a mind full of thoughts. In a world where everyone is rushing, scamming, and trying to survive, someone just reminded me what humanity looks like.
Since that day, I’ve found myself being more patient with strangers… and more hopeful.
