其實，這條路以前叫 Sungai Pinang（雙溪檳榔海濱），早期老居民還稱它為「淡水港」 。 在 2014 年 4 月 19 日，檳城前首長林冠英宣布將其正式改名為 “Karpal Singh Drive 卡巴星道” 。

這是為了悼念在同年 4 月 17 日因交通意外不幸離世的政壇與法律界一代巨人——卡巴星（Karpal Singh） 。他因堅定的政治立場與巨大貢獻，被譽為「日落洞之虎」 。為了讓他在日落洞有一條屬於自己名字的路，才有了如今這個極具象徵性的熱門地標 。
