More than 30 activists were detained last Thursday night over a peaceful vigil held at Dataran Merdeka as they were mourning over the death of more than 13,000 Malaysians who have passed away due to -19 illnesses and deteriorating mental health during the pandemic.
The peaceful vigil turned into a display of police brutality when the group was attacked by several police officers who were trying to drag them into a police truck, the Black Maria.
The youths who were claimed to resist the arrest repeatedly asked for their arrest statuses but they were not given any reasons behind their arrests nor were their rights read to them during the arrest.
The group was initially denied of their rights to have lawyers at Dang Wangi Police Station but the polices relented after being pressured by the public.
The activists were fined RM2000 each for going against the Pelan Pemuliharaan Negara, although the vigil abides to the SOP of social distancing and wearing masks.
