๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ Keeping Malaysian Teens Safe Online: A Conversation with Parents, Youth & Experts

Last week, we brought together parents, educators, youth leaders, and policymakers in Kuala Lumpur for our Screen Smart Malaysia event โ€” an important conversation about how we can work together to create safer online experiences for young people.

What We Shared About Teen Accounts

Now available in Malaysia across Instagram, Facebook & Messenger:

โœ… Private by default โ€” only approved followers can see content
โœ… Messaging restrictions โ€” only people teens follow can DM them
โœ… Time management โ€” daily reminders & Sleep Mode (10PM-7AM)
โœ… Parental Supervision โ€” set limits, see connections, get notifications
โœ… Teens under 16 need parental permission to change these settings

We also hosted an interactive session using conversation cards designed to help families talk openly about life online with Aishah Jennifer Sinclair.

Easy Tips to Help Your Teen Stay Safe Online

TIP 3: Safety features are already built in.

When your teen uses Instagram, Facebook, or Messenger, they're automatically placed into Teen Accounts with protections on by default:

โ†’ Strangers can't message them
โ†’ Only friends can tag them
โ†’ Age-inappropriate content is automatically filtered
โ†’ Suspicious images in DMs are blurred

For teens under 16, a supervising parent's permission is needed to change any of these settings.

DID YOU KNOW about this?

React:
๐Ÿ‘ = Yes, I knew!
๐Ÿ˜ฎ = This is news to me
โค๏ธ = This makes me feel better

Easy Tips to Help Your Teen Stay Safe Online

TIP 1: Stay curious about their world.

Teens use social media to explore hobbies, learn new things, and connect with communities that matter to them.

You might not recognise the creators they follow or the jokes they shareโ€”and that's okay.

Try this: Ask your teen to show you what excites them online.
It's a simple way to open conversations without it feeling like an interrogation.

YOUR TURN: Have you ever asked your teen to show you something they love online? What did you discover? Tell us in the comments.
