However, a woman raised by her ethnic Jakun mother and grandmother, who later lived with her Chinese mother-in-law before converting to Islam, decided to recreate the dish in a way that everyone could enjoy.

“It makes me happy knowing families from different backgrounds are eating this together,” she said.

For Mama Cah, every bak chang carries something deeper than just flavour. It’s a bridge between cultures, a preserved memory, and a story shared through food.
