Did You Know?
When hobbyists hear the term “reef safe,” they often assume a fish will never touch a coral.
With angelfish, it’s usually not that simple.
Many angelfish can thrive in reef aquariums, but coral nipping risk varies by species—and sometimes by individual fish.
Generally considered lower risk:
• Lamarck Angels
• Bellus Angels
• Swallowtail Angels
These species are planktivores in the wild and are often more successful in mixed reef systems.
Species considered higher risk:
• Coral Beauty Angels
• Flame Angels
• Lemon Peel Angels
• Emperor Angels
These angels are more likely to investigate or nip at certain corals, especially if they develop a taste for them.
Corals most commonly targeted may include:
• Zoanthids
• Fleshy LPS corals
• Large fleshy polyps
• Clam mantles
The biggest thing to remember?
“Reef safe” doesn’t mean risk free.
A well-fed angelfish, mature reef, and thoughtful species selection can improve your chances of success—but every fish has its own personality. Two angels of the exact same species can behave very differently.
Understanding the level of risk before bringing one home can help you make the best decision for your reef.
Whether you’re looking for a reef-friendly swallowtail or a show-stopping dwarf angel, we’re happy to help you choose the species that best fits your tank and livestock (at the LOWEST prices)
