"Our proposal aims to initiate low carbon practices while accommodating the international students who represent all the mankind on Earth, to solve global warming issues hand in hand."
Merging mankind, our proposal aims to connect University Malaya communities at the international level to contribute towards solving global warming which has existed for some time but has yet to be eradicated completely. Applying low carbon practices for this office building, we hope to create awareness among the university’s communities especially international students in realizing the UM’s goal of achieving a green campus status.
The building is surrounded by vast greenery to create more interaction between users and nature. Natural daylight can be captured in indoor spaces to reduce the use of artificial lighting. Moreover, movable horizontal louvers panels acting as façade treatment in response to the change of sun orientation throughout the days to provide sun protection for the indoor spaces. The multi-functional courtyard with the self-shading effect of the two building blocks can cater to various events besides acting as a breakaway area for the office users.
The modular office furniture and shelving units cater to different needs of workspaces to create a lively and vibrant workspace where users can change the layout according to their requirements for better work performance and environment. The building materials are made from all recycled industrial waste as part of the green initiatives and low carbon practice.
In conclusion, the LIVING OFFICE aims to create more awareness among the university’s communities especially international students in realizing the UM’s goal of achieving a green campus status by applying low carbon practices and green initiatives.

We shall now welcome you to… “The Powerhouse”!
“CLIMATE CRISIS IS AN EMERGENCY. As every architect should know, buildings contribute to almost 40% of global carbon emission annually. We are responsible for this. What if we see this as a potential and not as a threat?
Acknowledging the value of the “hidden heroes” of sustainability to UM, we intend to propose a platform where these “hidden heroes” can come together in their pursuit of bringing sustainability of UM to the next level!
As a place that people spend a significant amount of their time in, we are RETHINKING the office as a new workstation typology which is low carbon and energy efficient. In line with the values of UM’s hidden heroes, we intend to REUSE by close the resource loop by upcycling solid waste as building materials to eliminate upfront embodied carbon. Grounding the building to its tropical context, we intend to REVIVE and give life to the office, allowing it to breathe naturally through passive design strategies in its environmental setting.
RETHINK, REUSE, AND REVIVE are the pillars that make up our Low Carbon Office, which we think of it as a “Powerhouse”. By relying on renewable energy, the “Powerhouse” reaps the benefits that nature offers in the tropical context, and comprises of energy-generating pods that spark life to the powerhouse.
As a collaborative office for the heroes behind the well-being of our greenscape and waterscape; it will holistically empower the action-oriented research towards providing sustainable solutions to the campus.”
