On 10th June, Novotel in Vizag reverberated with the cheers and buzz of excited employees, as they actively participated in Connect - the Employee Town Hall of Seaways Group.
Happy, smiling faces, animated discussions and a highly interactive question and answer session characterized this employee engagement initiative.
Capt. PVK Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director of the Seaways Group fielded the questions from the enthusiastic employees, with his characteristic wit and candor.
Capt. Mohan took an emotional walk down memory lane, when he shared with the packed audience on the humble beginnings of Seaways from Vizag and the subsequent tremendous growth that Vizag and Kakinada branches have witnessed over the years.
Employees from Vizag and Kakinada, who have been with the Group for over 10 years were felicitated during the initiative.

SEAWAYS MUMBAI COMMENCES BULK OPERATIONS
Inspired by the presentation given by the Bulk Vertical during the AMC, Seaways Mumbai team geared up to handle its 1st bulk vessel at Indira Docks – MbPT. The team was eagerly waiting for the vessel and why not, after all we had won a tender floated by Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd beating some of the most established players in Mumbai market. JM Baxi, M Dinshaw….. just to name a few.
Hosting AMC brings you luck, so much so that MV Magic Orient arrived Mumbai on 24th January, 2016 which was the first day of the AMC. Our team was ready and the plan was chalked out well in advance.
The problems anticipated were:
1. Resistance from Dock Local Truck Association
2. Pilferage of cargo……last 3 vessels had given over 200 mt of shortage for RCF
3. No free days allotted by the port to store the cargo
The discharging operations started in the early morning of 25th Jan. As expected, the truck association had blocked the wharf giving no space to deploy our transporter’s trailers. The transporter was also threatened not to deploy his vehicles for Seaways. What followed was agitation, political interventions and show of muscle for next 48 hours. Finally, an agreement was reached which benefitted us. The Association had agreed to work at our rates and on our terms.
The other 2 problems were also handled by good seamanship. Keeping strict vigil on the cargo movement from the vessel resulted in zero handling loss. By regulating the discharge from the vessel we also managed to clear the carted cargo on the same day when the vessel completed her discharging thereby eliminating any demurrage cost.
Now for the most interesting part, other than seamanship there was SEAWAYSHIP that contributed to the success of this mission. Right from the CMD, Directors, SBD Head to our tally boy got aligned for a purpose – To make it happen. It is arranging funds at the eleventh hour by our Director Mr P Sarat Kumar or minute by minute operational inputs by Director Mr P Vivek Anand and overall strategy by Capt Mohan himself gave the team required strength.
The initial lead was shared by Capt Reddy, the encouragement to go out aggressively in the tender came from our ED Capt Vijay Gopal. Mr Venkateswaran had given permission to move a team of experienced people from Chennai and Tuticorin under the leadership of Mr Selvaraj and also monitored day to day operations. This team geled well with the local team and operated as one unit. Mr Krishnamurthy from Chennai, Capt Nayak from Bhubhaneshwar and Mr Pydi from Vizag were ever so eager to help. It is this synergy in the group which is so heartening to see. This truly is an ‘Enterprise that knows no Frontiers’.
