With colonialism dead and nationalism triumphant the name of one of the greatest British imperialists, Thomas Stamford Raffles, no longer goes untarnished.

Whether he was a 'schemer' or 'reformer is perhaps the task for a new generation of historians looking afresh at the record to judge, but in this classic biography first published thirty years ago the record is there for all to see.

It provides a clear background to the man, what he set out to do and what he was able to achieve.

However he may be viewed today in our emancipated age, Raffles was without doubt a humane and generous man, well ahead of his peers and his time in the broadness and liberality of his vision and outlook.

He was a conscious imperialist serving his nation, but one who believed in the values it bore and the benefits it bestowed. By his prodigious energy and pioneering zeal he succeeded in achieving much.

Yet his was a short life pockmarked by tragedy; he died at the age of forty-five. His work still survives around us today and is of relevance as much to the new world.

The author was raised being a close member of the family, amongst the large extended family of Dato' Onn Ja'afar, the man who founded the United Malays National Organisation, the ruling party of Malaysia.

As he playfully ran and frolicked through the corridors of power in the late 1940's and early 1950's, a time when UMNO was being formed, the memories from his youth have revealed a facet of history which may only be depicted by someone witnessing events as they unfold.

What the book depicts are events which could not and cannot be captured by academicians, events which occurred over a period as yet untold or recorded.
