Malaysia Blue Sky Rescue Team Becomes First International Team to Arrive in Aceh, Indonesia,
Rushes Two Tonnes of Medical Supplies to Disaster Zone

(Aceh, November 30th) As several Southeast Asian countries are struck by the region’s most severe floods and earthquakes this month, the Malaysia Blue Sky Rescue Team was the first to respond to an urgent request from Indonesia’s Aceh Province. It became the first international rescue team to arrive in the Aceh disaster zone, launching a cross-border medical and humanitarian relief operation.

Earlier this week, the Aceh region was hit by a magnitude 6.6 earthquake, followed by torrential rains and flooding triggered by a tropical cyclone. Multiple districts were left almost completely cut off from the outside world, with roads destroyed and communications disrupted. The death toll has continued to rise, and Aceh has entered a full state of emergency.

After receiving an urgent request for medical assistance from the Governor of Aceh on November 29, the Blue Sky Rescue Team immediately activated its international disaster response mechanism. That same afternoon, it urgently deployed a team of 10 members—comprising 3 doctors and 7 medical support personnel—who flew to Banda Aceh, the capital of northern Sumatra.

The mission is led by Dr. Patrick, medical advisor of the Malaysia Blue Sky Rescue Team, together with team commander Patrick Thong,

The operation also brought along two tons of emergency medical supplies, sponsored by Gomex Poliklinic including antibiotics, painkillers, dressings, disinfectants, temporary first-aid equipment, and other critically needed emergency medicines to support local victims and medical facilities.

The Blue Sky Rescue Team was among the earliest to enter the disaster zone and is currently the only foreign professional team actively providing medical assistance in Aceh.

Due to continuous heavy rainfall, multiple sections of major highways in northern Aceh many structures have collapsed and bridges have been destroyed. To prevent secondary disasters, the government announced road closures, rendering the team’s originally planned overland route from Banda Aceh into the disaster areas completely impassable.

To reach victims as quickly as possible, the team switched plans and flew by small aircraft directly into the severely affected city of Lhokseumawe, becoming one of the first international medical relief teams to successfully land there.

Upon arrival, the team immediately began triage operations, treatment of the injured, epidemic prevention measures, establishment of temporary medical stations, and distribution of relief supplies.

Indonesia has endured days of extreme weather nationwide, compounded by the magnitude 6.6 earthquake on the 27th, resulting in flash floods, landslides, and widespread inundation across multiple provinces. Many rural areas have been cut off from external contact, making rescue operations extremely challenging.

According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and international media reports, as of the night of the 29th, at least 248 people have died nationwide, more than 500 have been injured, and tens of thousands have been displaced— with North Sumatra and Aceh suffering the most severe impacts.
