A 3 Week Community Exhibition & Gathering
In collaboration with Hin Bus Depot
Leading towards Earth Fest 2026

EARTH FRIENDS is a 3-week exhibition happening NOW, created together with Hin Bus Depot as a pre-event leading towards Earth Fest.

Date : 22 May - 7 June 2026
location : Hin Bus Depot ( Penang )

More than just an exhibition, EARTH FRIENDS is about friendship, community, creativity, and the people behind the movement. Through shared spaces, stories, skills, art, seeds, music, food, and experiences, we hope to create meaningful connections between people and the Earth.

Each week carries a different theme, bringing together communities, makers, educators, artists, farmers, and storytellers who are slowly shaping a more sustainable and connected future.

WEEK 1 : Project M.A.R.S. & The Earth Fest Journey

The first week begins with the Project M.A.R.S. community, while also reflecting on the Earth Fest journey throughout the past years.

This week will feature different community members and creators including Xuxan, insect exploration, natural dye from the forest, Alan & Hui Xin’s wood craft works, we also conduct workshops related to natural dye and wood craft.

Xiao Khang will share his personal journey to China, made possible through connections built during last year’s Earth Fest — showing how meaningful communities can create unexpected opportunities and life-changing experiences.

WEEK 2 : Creative Community & Green Ecosystems

The second week focuses on the ecosystem surrounding Grow Community Market, Hin Market, Hin Bus Depot, and COEX — highlighting communities and creators moving towards greener directions, learning from nature, and creatively improving their products, practices, and ways of living.

Together with the Hin community, we will organize workshops such as lino printing, zine-making, and other creative activities.

This week’s sharing sessions will invite Tan Shih Thoe, Xuxan, Grow Community members, co-founders of Earth Fest, and Mei Chee Seong from COEX to speak about community growth, relationships, collaboration, creative ecosystems, and the importance of sustaining communities together.

There will also be sharing sessions by Hoyyeeabout the journey of Project M.A.R.S., Earth Fest, community building, and learning through nature.

WEEK 3 : Culture, Land & Everyday Living

The final week focuses on cultural and ecological sharing connected to our basic way of life.

Through the spirit of the Gawai season, this week will feature story sharing sessions, workshops, plants & Seeds exchange sessions, farmer music sessions, sustainable slow tourism conversations, and Earth Fest sharing circles.

Pop will also share his journey growing up in a paddy farming family and how he continues carrying this knowledge and connection with the land today.

Through this final week, we hope to celebrate indigenous wisdom, cultural exchange, and the deep relationship between people, land, food, seeds, and traditions.

EARTH FRIENDS is ultimately about bringing people together ~ creating a space where art, sustainability, culture, and community can meet naturally, grow slowly, and inspire one another.

【Cities of the Future: Community, Nature, and Resilience】

As our cities continue to grow, the real question is no longer just how we expand — but how we live.

What if a city is not only built for people, but built with people?
And what if nature is not something outside the city, but part of how the city breathes, grows, and survives?

This rare forum brings together practitioners working at the intersection of community, urban systems, heritage, media, and nature-based solutions. From grassroots initiatives to city-scale planning, the conversation explores how resilience can be built through people-led action, inclusive design, cultural activation, and green urban spaces.

What does a future city look like when community and nature sit at its core?

We are honored to feature:

** Cai Bingyu **
Executive Director and “Kampung Architect” of Ground-Up Initiative (GUI), Singapore. He leads Kampung Kampus in Yishun — a 26,000 sqm living campus for low-carbon, community-driven sustainability, integrating circular design, agriculture, and hands-on ecological learning. He also contributes actively to the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA-CSR), advocating for human-centric and socially responsible architecture.

** Zul Abas **
Co-founder and Operations Director of JOHO Group, a Johor Bahru-based creative agency and youth culture movement. He is the lead visionary behind KOTAJAIL — an adaptive reuse project transforming the historic Ayer Molek Prison into a cultural, heritage, and community activation space.

** Mohd Shahril Abd Manan **
Urban placemaking expert and Urban Mechanics Manager at Think City, as well as Deputy Chairman of Kelab Bandar Kita Johor Bahru. His work focuses on urban regeneration, community placemaking, and cultural activation across Johor Bahru, contributing directly to the Johor Bahru 2030 transformation agenda through people-centered city design.

** Melissa Tan (Moderator)**
Climate activist, TV host, and sustainability advocate. She is an Ambassador for EARTHDAY.ORG and Country Coordinator for Fashion Revolution Malaysia, leading regional campaigns on climate justice and circular economy. She has collaborated with Think City Institute on urban sustainability initiatives such as *The Citymaker: Waste Not, Want Not*, and is also the co-founder of The Green Guerrilla movement, driving grassroots urban environmental action and zero-waste living campaigns.

Together, they bring perspectives from community-led eco-living, cultural regeneration, urban systems transformation, and climate advocacy — connecting design, policy, media, and lived experience on the ground.

This forum will explore:
• How cities can grow without losing human and ecological balance
• The role of placemaking in shaping inclusive urban futures
• Community-led approaches to regeneration and resilience
• How culture, media, and green spaces redefine urban life

This is not just a discussion.
It is a glimpse into how our cities could live differently.

📅 13 June 2026
⏰ 12:30PM – 2:00PM
📍 Forum Area, Earth Fest 2026 (KotaJail, Johor Bahru)

If you care about cities, community, and the future of how we live together — this is a session not to be missed.
