带起整场戏的气势;

While the audience’s eyes are fixed on the performers on stage,
beside the stage, there is always a group of people like them.
Some tune their instruments,
some keep the rhythm on the drums,
and some have spent decades of their lives
within this small musicians’ corner.
They do not stand under the spotlight,
yet before an actor even begins to sing,
their music is already heard.
A single beat of the gong and drum
sets the energy for the entire performance;
a passage of string music
carries the joy, sorrow, and emotions of the characters on stage.
Their names are rarely remembered by the audience,
but with a lifetime of dedication,
they have accompanied every performance,
year after year.

This episode features a veteran lead opera performer with decades of experience,
as well as a musician who has accompanied Cantonese opera for more than 20 years.
One performs on stage,
while the other plays music below the stage.
One gives voice to the performance,
while the other carries the rhythm of the entire opera.
Without them,
the opera could not go on.

I always thought traditional opera was becoming more and more distant from young people.
But through this interview, I met a 23-year-old young performer who is still seriously learning and performing Cantonese opera.
He said, “Traditional opera truly needs young people to carry it on.”
Maybe traditions do not suddenly disappear. There are just fewer and fewer people willing to stay.

When I was young, watching my mother do paper shadow puppetry felt like the most ordinary part of daily life.
Only after growing up did I slowly begin to understand that behind these seemingly ordinary acts of persistence lies a journey filled with challenges and sacrifices.
Some people spend their whole life protecting a craft, not to be seen or remembered, but simply in the hope that it can continue to live on.
