🔎 Quick Overview: What is Nipah Virus?

Nipah virus is a zoonotic pathogen — it can spread from animals to humans and between people. Fruit bats (especially flying foxes) are the main natural carriers. First identified near Malaysia in 1999, this virus previously caused outbreaks in Malaysia and Singapore among pig farmers. There is no vaccine or specific cure for Nipah virus infection.

🚨 Severity & Symptoms

The disease can be severe and potentially fatal, with a high mortality rate. Initial symptoms may include:

• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Vomiting
• Sore throat
• Respiratory problems
• Confusion or neurological signs such as encephalitis in serious cases

🏥 Current Malaysia Situation

No Nipah cases have been detected in Malaysia at this time. MOH continues to work with the World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners to verify developments and remain ready to respond promptly. Surveillance efforts include strengthened screening and laboratory preparedness, and ongoing monitoring under the One Health approach (human, animal, and environmental health).

🛡️ How You Can Protect Yourself

✔ Maintain good hygiene – wash hands often with soap and water.

✔ Avoid contact with sick animals, especially bats and pigs.

✔ Don’t consume potentially contaminated food, like raw fruits that may have been touched by bats or unprocessed palm sap.

✔ Minimise close contact with sick people and bodily fluids.

✔ Seek medical help promptly if you develop flu-like symptoms after travel or exposure to potential risk.

📍 Travel Tips

If you’re planning travel to affected regions, follow official travel guidance and monitor your health during and after your trip.

📢 Stay Informed & Prepared

Follow updates from trusted health authorities like the MOH and WHO. Awareness is key — Don’t panic, but take action to protect yourself and your loved ones.
