Blue Nation

Today, we all in Loreto's community joined forces in opposition to the new presidential decree that turns Loreto's marina into a high-capacity and coastal shipping port. The proposed change in the decree jeopardizes our future in every way. It would increase the arrival of megacruise ships, large vessels, and mass tourism, which would put greater pressure on the marine ecosystem and drastically reduce the direct benefits for the livelihoods and employment of local people.

Loreto is a Marine National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its value lies in the conservation and protection of the ecosystem, and it allows for low-impact, sustainable tourism that protects the environment while benefiting the community. We want responsible tourism and well-being for the people of Loreto!

Hoy, en la comunidad de Loreto unimos fuerzas para oponerse al nuevo decreto presidencial que convierte el puerto deportivo de Loreto en un puerto de alta capacidad para el transporte marítimo costero. El cambio propuesto en el nuevo decreto, pone en riesgo nuestro destino en todos los aspectos, aumentaría la llegada de megacruceros, buques de gran tamaño y un turismo masivo, lo que implicaría mayor presión sobre el ecosistema marino y una reducción enorme de los beneficios directos para la vida de los locales y su trabajo.

Loreto es un Parque Nacional Marino, que es Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad, su valor se centra en la conservación y protección del ecosistema, y permite un turismo sustentable de bajo impacto que cuida el entorno ambiental al mismo tiempo que beneficia a la comunidad. ¡Queremos turismo responsable y bienestar para la comunidad Loretana!

🇺🇸 Have you ever seen flying dolphins? These are the playful Bottle-nosed Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). They love leaping out of the water, riding waves and racing the boats' bows; they're quite curious and fun. We're very lucky we get to see them very often within Loreto's waters as their dark gray colors make them very easy to identify (although there has been records of albino to nearly fully black individuals). They usually travel in small schools and even in huge pods of thousands, inshore and offshore waters. We love to witness them jumping all around having fun in their natural habitat!

🇲🇽 ¿Has visto alguna vez delfines voladores? Estos son los juguetones Delfines Nariz de Botella (Tursiops truncatus). Les encanta saltar fuera del agua, surfear las olas y competir con las proas de las embarcaciones; son muy curiosos y divertidos. Tenemos mucha suerte de verlos con frecuencia en las aguas de Loreto, ya que su color gris oscuro los hace muy fáciles de identificar (aunque se han registrado ejemplares desde albinos hasta casi completamente negros). Suelen viajar en pequeños grupos y hasta en grandes grupos de miles, tanto en aguas costeras como en alta mar. ¡Nos encanta verlos saltar y divertirse en su ambiente natural!

🇺🇸 Remember to pick up your trash! Well, or in this case, some others' trash! The Loreto Bay National Park is very clean compared to most reefs in the world, but fishing debris is a problem everywhere! 90% of the trash we pick up while diving is fishing related junk, like lines, hooks, leads, anchors, rope etc... Moderated, controlled sport fishing can be beneficial to a location. It brings awareness, money and promotion to a destination, but it needs to be done sensibly. Always go with a professional captain or guide who knows where to go and what to use. They help inimize trapped lines in the reef by knowing the topography, use biodegradable hooks, and respect the rules of the Park.

Also, if by chance you loose gear in the water or something dropped from your boat, please let us know! We would gladly recover it and bring it back to you next time we dive around the area!

🇲🇽 ¡Recuerda recoger tu basura! O en este caso, ¡la basura de otros! El Parque Marino de Loreto es un parque muy limpio en comparación, pero los desechos pesqueros son un problema en todos lados. El 90% de la basura que recogemos está relacionada con la pesca: sedales, anzuelos, anclas, cabos, plomos etc. La pesca deportiva moderada y controlada puede ser beneficiosa para un parque marino, trae consciencia ambiental, recursos y promoción al destino, pero debe hacerse de manera adecuada. Contrata siemopre un capitán o guía local y profesional. Ellos saben donde ir y que aparejos utilizar. Te ayudarán a reducir lineas atrapadas en el arrecife ya que conocen el fondo, usa anzuelos biodegradables y respeta las reglas del Parque.

Además, ¡déjanos ayudarte! Si un dia pierdes algo en el mar, algo que se cae de tu embarcación, avísanos, nos encantará recuperarlo la próxima vez que bucemos por la zona.

🇺🇸 Mandatory seasonal announcement! Winter is coming and with it, loads of migratory species. Some migrate from the depths, some migrate from different latitudes. Whales are the obvious example, but soon enough we will start seeing the massive schools of barracudas, like those in the picture. Yellowtails are showing up already, and hornsharks will shortly follow.
This tendency will carry on in crescendo and will explode in spring, where schools or mobulas will take over the place, nudibranchs will plague the reefs and feeding frenzies will speckle the sea. Yahoo!

🇲🇽 Post obligatorio anunciando la temporada! El invierno ya llega y con el montones de especies migratorias. Algunas migran desde las profundidades, otras vienen de otras latitudes. Las ballenas son el ejemplo obvio, pero muy pronto además empezaremos a ver los enormes bancos de barracudas como en la foto. El jurel de aleta amarilla ya empieza a asomarse, y los tiburones cornudos seguirán prontamente.
Esta tendencia continuara in crescendo hasta la primavera, donde el mar estallará. Los enormes grupos de mobulas asolarán el mar, los nudibranquios tomarán los arrecifes y los comeríos salpicarán las aguas. Yuhuu!
