How do you kick off a cookbook shoot with Stephen Colbert?

You do what guys do and go fishing, of course 🎣

First thing on Day One we piled into Stephen’s trusty Boston Whaler and zipped through the channel behind his house.

The tide wasn’t quite right when we arrived at his secret spot, so we dug into the boiled peanuts (first recipe photo, done! 🥜✅) and talked about uncommon career choices, unexpected successes, and friends from childhood who weren’t quite as lucky. Stephen Colbert is a soulful, grateful man.

We drank a beer and bemoaned the tide that still hadn’t turned. Stephen punched his man-card by throwing round “pancakes” with the cast net (as opposed to folded “tacos” which suck), and I eventually punched mine with the first fish of the day.

I’m sworn to secrecy about how many fish we caught that morning, and though I can’t speak for Stephen, I returned feeling pretty good about how the next few weeks of photo production would go.

It’s pub day for DOES THIS TASTE FUNNY and it is a beautiful book if I do say so myself. Most of these photos are in the book, others didn’t quite make the cut. More to come!
