In the spirit of Give to Gain, we engaged over 300 adolescent girls at Lukalazi Community Day Secondary School on the outskirts of Mzuzu. We discussed menstrual hygiene management, safe relationships, and the importance of working hard in school to attain college education. We also inspired the girls by sharing our own stories of triumphing through challenges and inequalities, reminding them that their circumstances do not define their future.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, we reaffirm our commitment to keeping girls in safe schools, ending child marriages, and promoting sustainable solutions such as training girls to sew reusable sanitary pads. When we empower girls with knowledge, skills, and hope, we help shape a generation that will rise beyond barriers.

Today, the 28th May- Menstrual Health Awareness day, we joined hands with our amazing partners, thus Malawi Girl Guides Association, Judith Foundation, Citizen Impact Organization-CIO, Beulah Foundation, and the District Youth Office, to commemorate Menstrual Health Awareness Day at Thandazga Primary School in Mzuzu. 🌸

Together with learners, teachers, mother group committees, local leaders, and parents, we held interactive information sessions that broke the silence around menstruation. We emphasized inclusivity where we encouraged boys to be allies and support their peers while promoting dignity, education, and health for all. 💪🏾

We were proud to distribute reusable sanitary pads to 60+ adolescent girls, helping reduce absenteeism and empower them to stay in school with confidence. 🩷

Periods are normal. Education is a right. Let’s keep the conversation going! 🗣️

EMDEF AWARDS STUDENTS DEBATERS

The Extra Mile Development Foundation (EMDEF) proudly recognized four students from Mchengautuwa Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mzuzu for their impressive victory in a debate competition held on Friday.

In a spirited contest, Mchengautuwa CDSS scooped 1,120 points, defeating Star Private Secondary School, which scored 1,040 points.

The debate focused on the thought-provoking theme: "Should men and women be equally responsible for domestic chores and child care?"

Tumbi Nyondo, a participant from CDSS, emphasized the importance of shared responsibilities in the household.

"Even outside the debate room, I believe that chores should be done equally by both genders in a household," she stated.

Towera Ngwira, Executive Director of EMDEF, highlighted the foundation's mission to promote critical thinking and raise awareness about gender equality among students through such competitions.

"We aim to empower young minds and encourage meaningful discussions on important societal issues," she added.

The winners were awarded medals and a cash prize of K50,000, while the runners-up received K40,000. Additionally, a top speech writer from Star Private Secondary School was honored with K50,000, thanks to the generous support of Act Umbumbano and ActionAid Malawi.

EMDEF remains committed to fostering youth empowerment and facilitating important dialogues through educational initiatives.

In our ongoing efforts to inspire students and help them reach new heights, we are proud to host the Debate Contest, the second in our series of creative educational initiatives.

This contest, brings together students from Mchengautuwa CDSS and Star P.V.T. Sec School to engage in thought-provoking discussions and friendly competition.

Building on the success of last week's speech writing competition, which honed students' written expression, this debate challenge encourages students to sharpen their critical thinking and public speaking skills.

By providing platforms for students to develop their critical thinking skills and showcase their talents, we aim to empower the next generation with the essential abilities needed for future academic and professional success.

Through this Debate Contest, we exemplify our commitment to fostering a dynamic educational ecosystem where students can thrive.

By participating in this contest, students will acquire essential skills in rhetoric, teamwork, and confident self-expression, setting them up for future success.
